Ackerman Bargaining
A scripted four-step concession plan: open at 65% of target, then move to 85%, 95%, and 100% with diminishing increments.
The Ackerman model is Voss''s answer to the question "how should I sequence my concessions?" You set your target, then plan four offers in advance: 65 percent of that number, 85 percent, 95 percent, and the target itself (100 percent). Between offers you use calibrated questions and tactical empathy to delay. The decreasing increments (20%, 10%, 5%, 5%) signal that you''re running out of room — without you having to say it. The counterpart''s anchoring instinct does the rest.
Example
You
"Our price is $300K." (target = $400K, so opened at 75% to leave room.)
Counterpart pushes hard.
You
"Let me see what I can do… $360K." (90%)
More pressure.
You
"I''ve fought hard internally. The number is $380K, and I''m bringing in the deck mat at no charge." (95% with non-monetary sweetener.)
You
(final) "Final position is $400K total. That''s where we are."
