Late-Night FM DJ Voice

Slow, calm, downward-inflecting vocal tone used to de-escalate tension and project authority.

Chris VossNever Split the DifferenceeasyTactical Empathy

The Late-Night DJ voice is Voss''s name for a deliberate vocal posture: slower than your normal pace, lower in register, with each sentence ending in a downward inflection. It signals certainty without aggression and physiologically calms the counterpart. Pair it with a labelled emotion ("It seems like this isn''t working for you…") and you can pull the temperature down by 30 percent in one move.

Example

Counterpart

"This is unacceptable — we agreed to $2M three weeks ago!"

You

(slower, lower) "It sounds like you feel I''ve gone back on something… I hear that. Let me walk you through what changed and why."

Counterpart

(visibly de-escalated) "Okay. I''m listening."
