The Late-Night DJ voice is Voss''s name for a deliberate vocal posture: slower than your normal pace, lower in register, with each sentence ending in a downward inflection. It signals certainty without aggression and physiologically calms the counterpart. Pair it with a labelled emotion ("It seems like this isn''t working for you…") and you can pull the temperature down by 30 percent in one move.

When to use

Use it any time emotions are climbing — your own or the counterpart''s — and especially when delivering bad news or holding firm on a number you''ve already named.

When NOT to use

Avoid it as a default monotone — used constantly it feels patronising. Don''t use it in cultures (some Gulf and Latin American business contexts) where vocal energy is read as engagement and slowness as disinterest.

How to counter this

Mirror their energy back at full volume to reset the tempo. Calm voices are easier to ignore than urgent ones, so reintroduce urgency to break the spell.
